Large Reception Desk, Tiny Elevator
Project: Reception Desk
Material: Krion Solid Surface by Porcelanosa Group
Location: Boston Private Industry Council - Boston,MA
Architect: Spalding Tougias
Fabrication: Sterling Surfaces
For this project we worked directly with the architect, Spalding Tougias, and the client, Boston Private Industry Council. After reviewing the concept drawings we received from the architect, we arranged to meet them and the client at the installation site to review the space and egress into the building and discuss the design particulars.
During that site meeting as we reviewed and measured the space we met the first big challenge. The space was on the 3rd floor of an older office building with small hallways and an even smaller freight elevator. This was the only way we could get the reception desk up and into the space.
We took dimensions of the elevator all doorways and widths of hallways through the building, then it was back to the drawing board to see how we would make this unit into pieces that would fit into the elevator. By creating 3D scale drawings of the elevator and the desk, we made sure that all the components would fit the elevator and could be reassembled in the space to look like one piece.
We then created a full set of shop fabrication drawings for client and architect to approve after which they were sent to our fabrication department. The fabrication team closely followed the drawings paying attention to all the details of where the seams were located and how the unit would need to be broken down later for delivery to make it easy for reassembly in the field.
When the installation day arrived, all were in anticipation to see if what we did in model would actually work in real life. Installation also brought another challenge. The space was already an open and operating office area. In order to accommodate the clients schedule and not to disrupt their business we began the installation late in the afternoon and on into the night.
All went as planned and the unit did fit the elevator. After 2 nights of work the reception desk was installed and ready for use.
