Sterling Surfaces Brings Corian® to the Rooftops
Project: Sony Building Rooftop Terrace Benches
Location: 25 Madison Ave. NYC
Material: DuPont™ Corian® “Glacier White”
Architect: STUDIOS architecture
Contractor: Steven Dubner Landscaping
Designing furniture for outdoor spaces has some unique challenges such as weather and heavy usage. Solid Surface materials such as DuPont™ Corian® meets these challenges with ease.
While Corian® is a perfect solution for outdoor applications, it does require some specific design and fabrication techniques, keeping in mind thermal expansion and other factors. This is why STUDIOS architecture contacted us to help out with the pre-design drawings of the rooftop terrace benches for the Sony building in NYC right from the project's conception.
The project required 3 large Corian® benches to be fabricated and installed around the building’s skylights. The benches are also backlit with LEDs to create a beautiful glowing ambiance on the rooftop terrace after the sun sets.
To meet the installation schedule, the Sterling Surfaces team coordinated field dimensioning and collaborated with the lighting and landscape contractors. Finally, we implemented job specific industrialized manufacturing techniques, quickening the production, and were able to meet the deadline.
